Notes & Reviews:

This jolly disc revives the little-known tradition of 'gallery music', suppressed in Victorian times because it was too cheerful. All fifteen works vitally capture the enthusiasm of an age newly emerging from a century which had seen Puritanical rejection of the pomp of Christmas. The vocal group Psalmody was formed especially for this recording and consists of professional singers, teachers and students drawn mainly from the Colchester area.

'Good rousing stuff' (Classic CD)

'A Christmas collection of genuine novelty' (The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs)

Notes & Reviews:

While Shepherds Watch is a collection of traditional holiday songs from English parish churches and chapels. Covering the years 1740-1830, these songs have a traditional feel about them that even the most familiar tracks still tend to keep. Anyone looking to explore the history and tradition of these songs may want to give this album a listen; there are some interesting inclusions to be found here. ~ Bradley Torreano
