Notes & Reviews:
Philippe de Monte was 47 years old in 1568 when he became Kapellmeister at the court in Vienna. No one at the time could have imagined that he would remain in this position for 35 years, first under Maximillian II, then under Rudolf II. Born in Mechelen, he was at first active primarily in Italy, although he did travel to Spain and England, accompanying Philip II on the occasion of his marriage to Mary Tudor. He ranks with Lassus as one of the two central figures in the last period of the golden age of Franco-Flemish polyphony.
