Notes & Reviews:

To this day, Willem Mengelberg (1871-1951) remains an enigma, both as a man and as a musician. Described by Pierre Monteux as "a wonderful colleague," he was also infamous for his protracted rehearsals, in which he could take up to two hours to have the orchestra tuned to his satisfaction and could stretch rehearsal time further with interminable lectures. His relationships with fellow conductors could range from admiration to ridicule and there is the matter of his supposed collaboration with the Nazis. His seeming indifference during the Occupation cost him his position as Musical Director of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and led to his exile in Switzerland. The exciting performances documented on this CD show Mengelberg's forcefulness, vitality and sheer conviction.
