Otto Nicolai composed the music for 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' during 1845-49. This opera, destined to become his German-language masterpiece, initially had trouble finding a theater willing to produce it. Its performance on 9 March 1849 under the composer was a stunning success, and it has continued to enjoy great popularity over the years. Even though the libretto and dramaturgy may seem somewhat outmoded to today's audiences, the high quality of its music has made it one of the mainstays of the repertoire.
Nicolai's touch is light and witty, with effective characterisation and assured vocal writing. The orchestration is constantly imaginative and the melodies flow one after another, repeatedly warming the listener's heart with some extra delicious touch. As Mesdames Ford and Page, Juliane Banse and Anna Korondi display formidable technique both individually and together, and Alfred Reiter makes a great deal of Falstaff...
