Notes & Reviews:

All of Puccini's popular operas are represented in this 17-CD boxed set, as well as the less frequently heard titles 'La Rondine', 'La Fanciulla del West', and 'Il Trittico'. Also included are highlights from 'Le Villi', an early work by Puccini that is almost never performed. The recordings (all stereo) come from EMI's unrivalled operatic catalog and feature some of the greatest stars in the world of opera, including: Montserrat Caballe and Placido Domingo in Manon Lescaut; Mirella Freni and Nicolai Gedda in La Boheme; Maria Callas, Carlo Bergonzi, and Tito Gobbi in Tosca; Victoria de los Angeles and Jussi Bjorling in Madama Butterfly; Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu in La Rondine; Neil Shicoff and Maria Guleghina in Il Tabarro (from Il Trittico); Tito Gobbi and Victoria de los Angeles in Gianni Schicchi (from Il Trittico); Birgit Nilsson in La Fanciulla del West; and more!

BBC Music Magazine
Alagna shapes his arias exquisitely and the Act II duet 'Perché mai cercate' with Gheorghiu is glorious'

BBC Music Magazine
Bohème is Thomas Schippers's memorable recording, with Freni and Gedda appealing lovers. Tosca features the dream-team Callas and Gobbi... Madama Butterfly heads a fine performance, though Jussi Björling's Pinkerton divides opinion, ringing but stiff. For Trittico we have Pappano's excellent 1997 Tabarro and Suor Angelica, but Gianni Schicchi is the ripe Santini classic with Gobbi and de los Angeles.
