Although it is not too long since Franco Corelli passed away, he retired from the stage over thirty years ago. Since then he has been missed but when Corelli bowed out at a mere 55 years of age in 1976, he was being wholly consistent with his professionalism and that perfectionist approach to his art which would never have allowed him to follow the example of other opera stars who could never quite say a definitive "no" to the thrill of a live performance, even when their age advised them against it. A great deal has been said and written about Corelli, who is thoroughly deserving of his ranking at the forefront of opera, both historically speaking and as a recording artist.
