Carl Nielsen, Denmark's most famous composer, is known mainly for his six symphonies. It is a little-known fact, however, that Nielsen also occupied himself intensively with the piano, even though the violin was his first instrument. He wrote his piano compositions, like his symphonies, over many years, and their stylistic breadth practically equals that of these orchestral works.
