Boris Bekhterev was educated at Moscow's Gnessin School of Music and obtained a doctorate at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. After winning first prize in the Soviet Pianists' Competition in 1970, he began giving solo recitals and performing with Vladimir Spivakov. He has taught at the Moscow Conservatory and at the Academie Internationale of Tours. Now a resident of Japan, he is professor of piano at Kobe College and Mukowaga University.
