Notes & Reviews:

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 is among the most frequently performed of 20th-century symphonies. He composed Symphony No. 5 after receiving much criticism in the press (on the instructions of Stalin). Many have described this piece as, "a Soviet artist's reply to just criticism."

Gramophone Magazine
This is a performance [of No. 5], in short in which every detail has been carefully thought out in the context of an evolving structure ... If I had to live with a single account of this great symphony, I should be very content if it were this one.
