Notes & Reviews:

Hailed as "one of the foremost performers and teachers of trumpet in the U.S.," Richard Stoelzel maintains an active career as an international soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. He began his career as solo cornet with the U.S. Coast Guard Band. As a soloist he has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad including three tours of China and has been named Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Shen Yang Conservatory of Music. This is his second recording for Albany Records.

"Here we have an entertaining album of beautifully crafted new works in a generally very conservative style, played by all concerned with aplomb and color. I am tempted to leave the review at that, but let me tell you more about the music, all from American composers. James Stephenson gives us the music with the most dynamic and stylistic variety here, finding a pleasantly wide range of mood and pacing. Much of the remainder of the program proceeds in a more stately fashion, although the Erik Morales Concerto is not without some spicy moments. Eric Ewazen originally wrote his Hymn for the Lost and the Living for a military wind band, as a memorial for the victims of the September 11 attacks. Ewazen was teaching a theory class at Juilliard at the time of the catastrophe, and in this transcription of the original work for trumpet and piano, he finds a simple, yet honestly heartfelt expression of grief. Robert Bradshaw is represented by two works, four portraits of American wildflowers (a curious, and ultimately unconvincing kind of programmatic angle) and a smart and engrossing Concerto. Stoelzel makes no attempt to challenge the listener with his choice of material, but his playing is beautiful, featuring a clear, focused tone and subtle dynamic control. For those so inclined, this is a nice little chestnu[t]." - Peter Burwasser, Fanfare
