Notes & Reviews:

After Atterberg, Rangstrom, Peterson-Berger, and Wiren, CPO's series featuring major Swedish composers of the first half of the twentieth century now makes its way to Natanael Berg. Since at the time a composer could not earn his livelihood from his music in Sweden, it is not surprising that until 1939 Berg worked for the Ministry of Defense, where he held the rank of a major and was assigned the special task of taking care of the royal horses. While preparing for his medical examinations, Berg also studied music and received important collegial advice from Wilhelm Stenhammar. From the very beginning Berg's interest was in the full, richly instrumented orchestra - which meant that he occupied himself almost exclusively with two genres, the symphony and the opera.
