Notes & Reviews:
Six weeks prior to the premiere of his Piano Concerto in F minor Max Reger wrote in a letter, "The work is very difficult. It is, so to speak, a sort of Brahms D minor concerto translated into the modern mode." And, just like the Brahms concerto, Reger's opus was a fiasco with the press and the public. The work's failure bitterly disappointed the composer: "My piano concerto will continue to be misunderstood for some years; the musical language is too severe and serious; the public will first have to become accustomed to it." The malaise surrounding this concerto had to challenge a pianist like Michael Korstick; he takes on the enemy with intellectual grace - and wins.
