Les Beatitudes was the work of a profoundly religious man, Cesar Franck. In this massive oratorio, it was Franck's goal to provide a musical expression for Christ's eternal message, the Sermon on the Mount. Scored for considerable resources including six singers, choir, organ, and a large orchestra, Franck's musical vision rises to the level of his sublime subject matter. Helmuth Rilling leads the work convincingly; the soloists, all first-class singers, perform with conviction; and the sublime Gachinger Kantorei Stuttgart fully realizes Franck's vision of spiritual enlightenment.
