Notes & Reviews:
"The Academy of Ancient Music is one of the best and oldest of period-instrument groups, so it should come as no surprise that their performances are excellent in every way. The music is not rushed but is given room to make its effect. The performers tease the rhythm so that the performance never sounds rigid or mechanical. Ornaments are applied, especially in slow movements, but in faster ones as well...Egarr's performances have a much brighter sound because of the absence of the cello [from the continuo]. As Egarr remarks, in his performances the harpsichordist is challenged to produce as much color as possible, and Egarr succeeds brilliantly here...For its outstanding performances and its different approach to the continuo, this recording deserves a place in the collection of every lover of Handel's music and of Baroque chamber music in general." - Fanfare
The Independent on Sunday
Minus bowed bass, Egarr's harpsichord accompaniment is free and expressive. The soloists slide easily from austerity to opulence, and Brown's dewy-toned recorder is enchanting.
BBC Music Magazine
The soloists here are stylish and imaginative. Decorations are a delight in slow movements; the Adagio from No. 8 (oboe) is positively dripping with them. The playing is highly expressive... Highly commended as both the complete Op. 1 package and as deeply satisfying performances.
Gramophone Magazine
The playing of the three principles of the Academy of Ancient Music sparkles, charms and soothes.
