Notes & Reviews:

Sure to be one of the major releases of 2009, Onyx presents Viktoria Mullova's first complete recording of the Sonatas & Partitas. Mullova recorded the Partitas on a modern violin for Philips in the early 90s, but had never recorded the Sonatas. In the meantime, her interpretations have been transformed by her studies in Baroque practice and her subsequent performances with masters such as Gardiner, Harnoncourt, Antonini and Il Giardino Armonico. Mullova plays her Guadagnini violin of 1750, using gut strings a Baroque bow and technique, as she always does in pre-romantic music. The booklet features an article by Mullova explaining her long and still-evolving journey working on Bach.

"Viktoria Mullova explains, in her notes, that her recording of Bach's Solo Sonatas and Partitas represents a milestone in her development: that she had been taught in the Moscow Conservatory to play these works with beautiful tone, uniform vibrato, and rigidly controlled articulation. Now, making use of a 1750 Guadagnini, gut strings, a baroque-style bow, and tuning to A 415, Mullova's Bach should make a very different impression... Beneath all the warmth and brilliance - and the overall apparent flexibility - of Mullova's performance lies the same flashing steel that I heard in 1987; overall, it's a synthesis of two approaches: Mullova may have changed her mind, but that mind's still hers. Strongly recommended. -Fanfare

For Philips in the early 90s Viktoria recorded the 3 Partitas on a modern violin but has never recorded the Sonatas, and in the meantime her interpretations have been transformed by her studies in Baroque practice and her subsequent performances with masters such as Gardiner, Dantone, Harnoncourt, Antonini and il Giardino Armonico. Viktoria Mullova records again on her Guadagnini violin of 1750, using gut strings a Baroque bow and technique, as she always does in pre-romantic music. 2CDs for the price of 1.5. Gramophone Classical Music Guide
These are outstanding performances. Mullova brings together several ideal qualities for a Bach player. Firstly, there's a secure sense of style, apparent equally in the rhythm and character of each of the Partitas' dances, and in the ornamented introductory movements of the first two Sonatas. Then there's her superior, virtuoso's technique, producing beautifully precise tuning and, in the fugal movements, finely controlled, varied and euphonious playing of the most densely polyphonic passages. To this we can add her deep musical understanding; by means of subtle emphasis and natural dynamic contrasts, she draws our attention to the beauty of Bach's harmonic progressions and to the balance and grandeur of his designs. Even on the few occasions where Mullova isn't entirely convincing the poise and sheer quality of the playing remains extremely persuasive. There have been many fine recent recordings of these works, but this one is definitely not to be missed.
