Notes & Reviews:

April 24, 2009 marks the jubilee of one of the rare concerts given in Moscow by Yevgeny Mravinsky with his Leningrad Philharmonic. The 'Unfinished' is worthy of comparison with Furtwangler's recordings in Berlin (1950) and Vienna (1951). In Tchaikovsky, his relentless vision of the 4th Symphony, Mravinsky's repertoire starting in 1938, comes vividly back to life. In listening to it, one is unsure of whether they are witnessing a funeral ritual or rite closer to sacrifice. Praga has lovingly restored and remastered the original 1959 recordings for SACD, and the medium presents these musical treasures in the best sound possible.
