Notes & Reviews:

A seminal 1970 release on Wergo, this is a prime example of Reich's "phase" phase, music which, in its audacious logic, seems to unfold out of itself. The early minimalist experiments of Glass and Reich are never arid exercises since the whole secret of the original minimalists is that a simple triad or a long-held note eventually produces its own richly romantic content as if by auto-genesis. The consevatory trained Glass and Reich got there by repetition and relentless rhythm; the more intuitive La Monte Young and Terry Riley by improvising on a deep drone.
