Notes & Reviews:

This disc was recorded in the inspiring setting of Lichfield Cathedral with the thrilling accompaniment of the Fine Arts Brass. Like Saint-Saens and Franck, Joseph Jongen was first and foremost a composer who had had a rigorous training as an organist. Ysaye asserted that he was a great composer, and even now this charming reserved genius may be considered the greatest composer Belgium has produced since it became an independent kingdom in 1831. Some magnificent chamber music, among the finest of its period, is a testament to that. The style of Flor Peeters was influenced by his organ teachers, by Flemish hymns, plainsong and folksong, and by the music of his fellow countryman, Jongen.
