Notes & Reviews:

Johann Wilhelm Wilms was initially met with great success: "This still young composer, full of life, fire, and grace, will soon have spread his reputation everywhere" (AMZ, 1807). Wilms' music however, like that of many of his contemporaries, from Eberl to Fesca - had no chance against Beethoven, for musical as well as nonmusical reasons. His works continued to enjoy popularity and to be frequently performed for about two decades, but then they fell into oblivion. This recording of two of Wilms' symphonies and an overture from his late period in an inspired interpretation by Howard Griffiths nevertheless demonstrates the viability and independence of this composer's oeuvre!
