Album Remarks & Appraisals:
Christopher Rouse, one of America's most prominent composers, has won a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy Award. Rouse's music is unequalled in its emotional intensity. The New York Times has called it "some of the most anguished, most memorable music around." His work 'Compline' is a souvenir of a trip to Rome, and is representative of the twin cultures of the ancient Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic church. The String Quartet No. 1 was conceived and largely composed in the centenary of Bartok's birth, and is an homage to that greatest of twentieth century quartet composers. Commissioned by the Cleveland Quartet, the String Quartet No. 2 is a tribute to the warmth and generosity of the people of Moscow and Leningrad. The Calder Quartet is always expanding its unique array of projects by performing traditional quartet repertoire as well as partnering with innovative modern composers, emerging musicians, and performers across genres.
