After having received endless requests from Edinburgh publisher George Thomson, in 1809 Beethoven finally agreed to write accompaniments, preludes, and postludes for piano, violin, and cello to 43 Scottish, Welsh, and Irish folk songs. But Beethoven would not have been Beethoven if this modest task had not stimulated his musical curiosity and compositional creativity. And Thomson, who published music as a sideline, was motivated by a genuine passion for the rich heritage of British song. Here, these folk songs are performed by one of Britain's most versatile and popular sopranos. Lynne Dawson enjoys a diverse career that combines concerts, recitals, recordings, and opera productions, appearing all over the world with the world's leading orchestras.
