Album Remarks & Appraisals:

2009 holiday release featuring the original best selling Jackson 5 Christmas album (originally released in 1970) plus 10 bonus tracks including a rare Michael Jackson Christmas song, 'Little Christmas Tree' and acapella and 'stripped' mixes of beloved songs from the original LP, highlighting Michael Jackson. Also includes original spoken-word 'Season's Greetings' from Michael and his brothers.

The Jackson 5 Christmas Album was the only holiday album released by Motown family quintet The Jackson 5. Released in October 1970, the album showcased the brothers' harmonies and vocals. Lead singer Michael Jackson is prominently featured on the album tracks. Included on the Christmas Album is the Jackson 5's hit single version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town". Rendered with a pop-soul feel, the Jackson 5's versions of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" remain frequent radio requests during the holiday season. The album spent all four weeks at the number one position on Billboard magazine's special Christmas Albums chart that the magazine published in December 1970, making it the best-selling holiday album of that year. It has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide.

In 2003, Universal Motown re-released the album with "Little Christmas Tree" (from A Motown Christmas).

In 2009, this configuration was released as Ultimate Christmas Collection with Christmas messages, remixes, and a Christmas medley, and again as Merry Christmas Jackson 5.

"Michael Jackson was one of my first grade-school crushes. I feel in love with him and his Thriller album when I was 12, and I still love to listen to "Beat It," Billie Jean," and "Thriller." I was not very familiar with Jackson's earlier work with the Jackson 5, although I did know about "Rockin' Robin" and "ABC." When I was at Target one day a few weeks ago, I saw The Jackson 5 Ultimate Christmas Collection and decided to buy it to supplement the few Christmas albums that I already owned. I'm glad I did; this is a fun holiday album.

The album as a whole features quite a few secular Christmas songs, most of which are familiar favorites to anyone who has turned on a radio station after Thanksgiving Day. The interpretations are a bit different, though, featuring that "Motown" sound from the 1960s and 1970s. The music is both a bit livelier a bit more bluesy than the commonly played versions of the songs. It just sounds like the Jackson 5, especially when Michael is the featured vocalist.

The liner notes do not contain much information beyond the names of the songs and what track they are. Information about where the various tracks were originally published is also included (for example, the first 11 tracks were first issued in 1970 as Jackson 5 Christmas Album).

The Jackson 5 Ultimate Christmas Collection is a must-have for fans of the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson, but it's also enjoyable holiday listening for people who haven't followed any of the Jacksons' careers and drama. It's not an album that I think is indispensable, but it's definitely enjoyable." -Epinions

ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS COLLECTION is a reissue of THE JACKSON 5 CHRISTMAS ALBUM released in 1970 on Motown, with ten bonus tracks. This is a pleasing combination of holiday classics, with not so classic, but still enjoyable, original tunes. Collectors will be interested in hearing the bonus cuts exclusive to this compilation, such as the spoken seasons greetings from Michael, Jermaine, Tito, and Jackie, originally issued on a 1973 promotional single; "Little Christmas Tree," from A MOTOWN CHRISTMAS, also from 1973; and remixed and a cappella versions of "Up on the House Top," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Someday at Christmas," "Give Love on Christmas Day," and "J5 Christmas Medley."
