Notes & Reviews:

For those string players aware of them, Michael Hersch's works for unaccompanied string instruments have quietly loomed large. This disc is the first in a series of three Vanguard Classics discs to be released over three years, surveying Michael Hersch's complete solo music for strings. His two sonatas for unaccompanied cello are among the most demanding ever composed for the medium. The Sonata No. 1 is a relatively early work, written by Hersch at only twenty-three years of age. The Sonata No. 2 was completed some six years later and is dedicated to cellist Daniel Gaisford.
