Notes & Reviews:

It was rather by accident that Peter Tchaikovsky discovered the string quartet genre for himself in February 1871. His debut in this genre would mark his first great success. The renowned Utrecht String Quartet inaugurates its complete recording of Tchaikovsky's string quartets on MDG with the Quartets in D major op. 11 and in F major op. 22.

Gramophone Magazine
The playersàrich tone and blended sonorities make the most of Tchaikovsky's beautiful harmonic passage, while solo melodies such as those for viola and cello in the finale of the First Quartet have an ample sound that does full justice to this highly emotional music. The Utrecht Quartet match an unfettered expressive manner with a care for the music's flow; a movement such as the Second Quartet's Andante... moves so well through its long paragraphs that we can easily appreciate what a fine structure Tchaikovsky has created.
