Notes & Reviews:

In conjunction with CPO's edition of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's complete string quartets, they now turn to his compositions for violin and piano. Weinberg always named Shostakovich as his source of inspiration. There is nevertheless a significant difference between the two: apart from two mature piano sonatas, Shostakovich wrote only one sonata each for violin, viola, and violoncello, while Weinberg composed almost thirty sonatas. His Sonata No. 5 was the first but by no means the last work dedicated by him to his senior colleague Shostakovich. The grand design of the sonata is astonishing. Its conclusion is formed by a racing finale, and the demonic fugue at its center is framed by recollections of the first movement. This catchy composition is certainly the most beautiful of Weinberg's violin sonatas and one of the most outstanding of all his works.
