Notes & Reviews:

"I have repeatedly been approached about completing Schubert's sketch. In the clear presence of the bold modulatory intentions, in the character of the andante radiating with Beethoven's spirit, and in view of the great C major symphony, which gives us the scherzo, I recognized that here a transition from the master's early works to his great least creative period is underway and agreed to undertake the task of its completion." It was thus that Felix Weingartner described how he came to rework and finish this Schubertian symphonic fragment in 1934. Given his lifelong love for this composer, nobody was more predestined for this task.

” Even so, the music itself, with its many pre-echoes of the Unfinished and Great C major symphonies, is compelling as it forms a bridge from Schubert's "juvenilia" to the mature masterworks of his "late" period. Francis leads the orchestra in a lively rendition, though he doesn't supplant the earlier recording by Heinz Rögner with the Berlin RSO. CPO's resonant recording places the orchestra to the rear, but at least in this case the violin doesn't dominate the acoustic. A novel and worthy release, especially for Schubertophiles.”-Classicstoday.com

... Weingartner's... Violin Concerto is an attractive work... if not without its darker moments... and Laurent Albrecht Breuninger's violin-playing combines playfulness with a welcome warmth of tone. Alun Francis directs sympathetic performances of both works, well recorded...
