Notes & Reviews:

The highlight of this chamber music survey is the Piano Quartet, one of the composer's finest chamber compositions, which Martinu wrote during his American years. The work demonstrates his versatility and a fantastically colourful musical language. After the Piano Quartet, Martinu embarked upon the first of his six substantial symphonies, which are a major contribution to the symphonic legacy of the first half of the twentieth century. This disc also features the Oboe Quartet, Piano Trio No. 3 and Duo No. 2 for violin and cello.

”The Chandos disc is a stunner, and not just for the terrific playing and profound understanding of the Martinu mise that the Schubert Ensemble brings to the table, but because of the selection of music itselfhaving all of these works on one disc makes for a fascinating listening experience, letting us trace the composer’s development in the genere, and I seriously doubt whether another such offer will be forthcoming any time soon. It is nice that there is one of this quality available for those interested.”-Fanfare

BBC Music Magazine
The Schubert Ensemble responds superbly to the Piano Quartet and the Trio with a clear sense of involvement in Martinu's musical language and their performances of the slow movements are particularly memorable.

Gramophone Magazine
The Schubert Ensemble's performances are first-rate, partnered marvellously by George Caird in the 1947 Quartet.
