Notes & Reviews:

The three Christmas cantatas brought together here seem to belong to the same period, notably the first months after J.S. Bach's assumption of his new duties as Cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. "Christum wir sollen loben schon" and "Sehet, welch' ein Liebe" were composed for the second and the third days of Christmas in 1723 respectively, while "Ich freue mich" was composed for third day of Christmas in 1724. This third cantata is stylistically the latest of the three and is clearly separate from the first two, although the three cantatas nevertheless have one thing in common: all three make use of the cornet and the trombone, instruments that Bach rarely employed in his cantatas.

"Good news and bad news. This disc of Christmas cantatas has arrived in time for the Christmas season, but too late for the Christmas issue. But there is better news. It is a thoroughly enjoyable disc, well worth your attention... All of the vocal soloists come out of the choir, as they would have in Bach's day. Yet more good news: all are splendid. So what's not to like? Well, practically nothing. Try to remember this review as next Christmas approaches - if you haven't jumped the gun and already acquired this disc." -Fanfare
