Notes & Reviews:

James Tenney was one of the most versatile figures in contemporary American music. This CD set offers complete recordings of one of the most important of Tenney's later sets of pieces—Spectrum Pieces 1–8. Lasting more than two hours in total, they offer a summation of much of Tenney's compositional practice and at the same time break open new and fertile territory that he had regrettably little time to explore in subsequent compositions.

"James Tenney, who died in 2006, studied music with major radicals - Carl Ruggles, Edgard Varese, John Cage - but he cut his own inimitable path. He was a genuine experimentalist who knew a great deal, yet remained responsive to the allure of the unknown...Spectrum Pieces is a collection of eight chamber works - five written in 1996, three in 2001 - that explore the harmonic series, with scored deviations from tempered pitch and some retuning of instruments...Shape, processes of change and formal relationships are not skeletal abstractions within Spectrum Pieces, but embodiments that engage the ear as well as the mind with their lucid yet elusive beauty." - Julian Cowley, Wire
