Notes & Reviews:

BMOP/sound's newest release, Chamber Concertos I-VI, is a comprehensive recording featuring the six chamber concertos of Elliott Schwartz. Spanning more than 30 years of his compositional career, these works represent a sort of fusion of the solo concerto and the concerto grosso. Moreover, they reflect the composer's fascination with neo-Baroque models in which the virtuoso role is moderated to allow for complex textural possibilities. Each concerto offers stellar instrumental performances by BMOP musicians.

”This is a fascinating issue. Gil Rose and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project play with an authority that seems directly analogous to that shown by groups such as the London Sinfonietta. This may well be Want List material.”-Fanfare

"This is a fine tribute from the highly acclaimed Boston Modern Orchestra Project to 30 years of Elliott Schwartz's idiosyncratic output. Each of the six chamber concertos, four in first recordings, features a single soloist in a continuity ranging from monologue to free-ranging superimposed textures. Schwartz describes his technique as "different strategies for dealing with the 'concerto' principle-six variations, not on a theme, but on a genre." An essential part of his idiom is quotation from older styles, actual or implied but often unobtrusive. These tonal implants give a depth and resonance to a completely personal musical discourse... The CD is well produced with generous notes and attractive cover art from Dorothy Schwartz." - Peter Dickinson (Gramophone)

"As expected, all of the performances are of the highest caliber. The orchestra fully embraces Schwartz's forceful ensemble concept, and each of the soloists brings to the table every technical and artistic resource he has, from clean and penetrating timbres to a complete command of extended techniques. To be sure, Schwartz's music is not for everyone; the constant stream of angular themes, ferocious dissonances, and jagged rhythms will make most traditionalists run for the hills. But one cannot dismiss the commitment and professionalism of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project." - Patrick Hanudel (American Record Guide)
