Notes & Reviews:

A wonderfully bizarre collaboration between the Sirba Octet, Isabella Georges and Orchestre de Pau Pays de Bearn produces a release that takes us on a journey into the very heart of Yiddish music. Yiddish Rhapsody is the fruit of an improbable encounter between a group of classical musicians who play Yiddish music (Sirba Octet), a singer with a passion for musical comedy and jazz (Isabelle Georges), and a symphony orchestra, the Orchestre de Pau Pays de Bearn conducted by Fayçal Karoui. This highly unusual trio invites you on a journey into the heart of Yiddish melody. Revisited with respect and ingenuity, these melodies make us swing as in the days of the Barry Sisters, console or lull us, stir our hearts, speak of the human soul and the feelings that bring us all closer together. Poetic, tender, poignant or amusing, they are a bridge between present and past, a tremendous hymn to life.

Reviews

yiddish rhapsody
I really wanted to like this disc. The cover design is great, but I guess ďdonít judge a book by its coverĒ should also apply to music. Maybe Iím just not used to listening to Yiddish singing. I really liked the beginning of the first track, but then it got a bit too dramatic for me. It sounded a little bit too much like the soundtrack to a movie for me. While I could appreciate the musical talent conveyed on this disc, I just couldnít connect with the music.
