Notes & Reviews:

Toscanini's commitment to music by his contemporaries is demonstrated with these recordings, which are taken from broadcasts made in 1940 and 1943.

The Atterberg comes from a November 21, 1943, Studio 8H broadcast; all the other items from a special Tuesday night broadcast on May 14, 1940, of a concert given in Washington’s Constitution Hall as a promotion for the NBC Symphony’s forthcoming tour of South AmericaSome might prefer a more suave approach of others, but Toscanini’s account has merit. The work by Fernandez (1897-1948) was undoubtedly here, it is certainly an exhilarating (if not major) piece. Overall, the sound on this release is quite listenable considering its vintage; it includes some announcements from the 1940 broadcast. Although this release may not be for everyone, it can be strongly recommended for those interested in Toscanini.”-Fanfare
