Notes & Reviews:

The Westminster Cathedral Choir is well-known for performing and recording masterworks of Spanish, Portuguese, and Mexican sacred polyphony. This CD includes works by four of the at least six major chapelmaster composers at Mexico City and Puebla from about 1575 to 1750: Hernando Franco, Juan Gutierrez de Padilla, Francisco Lopez Capillas and Antonio de Salazar.

”The native-born Lopez’s music is notable for its greater simplicity than the works of the Spanish-born composers heard here. Mostly set for four voices (and never double choir), his music is fresh and simple, betraying nothing of grand scaleor rich sonority, as Bruno Turner observes in the notes. Franco’s Salve regina in this performance is notable for a treble soloist of remarkable poise. This is a revealing testimony to the cultural tradition of colonial Latin America.”-Fanfare

'If like me, your knowledge of Mexican music was previously, shall we say undeveloped, you may similarly be stunned by the treasures unveiled here' (The Music Magazine)

'This is a magnificent recording. Pure Mexican gold' (Gramophone)

'Unusual, timely, interesting, and beautiful' (Fanfare, USA)
