Notes & Reviews:

Among his early keyboard works, the Prelude, the Toccata, and the Fantasy represent a type of composition that allowed Johann Sebastian Bach to approach the limits of keyboard playing outside a strict formal framework. This recording by Leon Berben impressively displays the virtuosity that liberation from form allows. The early keyboard toccatas are some of the most mysterious and most fascinating of Bach's works - they don't exhibit any of the characteristics of Bach's later, more mature compositions.
