Notes & Reviews:

String octets by Gade (1817-90) & Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-47). In 1848, Gade finished his string octet, which is a declaration of faith in German music. His octet is obligated to Mendelssohn in medium, form, & style. Mendelssohn composed his string octet at the age 16. "...all this is new, strange, and yet so familiar & pleasing - one feels so close to the world of spirits, lightly carried up into the air." Mendelssohn's Sister, Fanny.
