Notes & Reviews:

The disc was originally recorded in 1965.

American Record Guide, September/October 2015
This is the first time I've encountered a mandolin orchestra - 6 firsts, 6 seconds, 3 tenor, 3 mandoloncelli, 4 guitars, 2 contrabasses, and harp. I have no idea if this is standard, but it works as a plucked counterpart to a string orchestra. To my ears, it sounds rather like a swarm of bees - but an unusually melodic one. The notes include information on the composers and their careers. The opening work, Carlo Munier's Giglio Fiorentino (Florentine lily) is my favorite. Indeed, most of the pieces strike me that way. This is more portentous music, with richer harmony and greater drama - appropriately enough, given the subject matter.
