Notes & Reviews:
This CD deals with the art of ornamentation in Italy from 1550 to 1650. There were two types of ornamentation during this period: the first used diminutions, a type of variation of the vocal lines, while the second involved ostinati, repeated sequences of chords with a clearly instrumental origin. Harmonic frameworks, popular madrigals, and chansons provided ammunition for musicians to display their improvisatory skills and their technical mastery of their instrument.
