Notes & Reviews:
World-famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, a living legend in his own country, is better known for his numerous songs and film music than for his symphonic works, which have yet to be fully discovered. This double CD presents a good opportunity to do so. It contains the Suite No. 1 for Piano and Orchestra and the Piano Concerto, written in the fifties when Theodorakis was still at the Paris Conservatoire, and, in its first studio recording on CD, the Symphony No. 2, "The Song of the Earth" (based on Suite No. 1 and the ballet "Antigone"), which marks the composer's return to symphonic writing after 20 years of struggle and suffering for his country and his people. These unique recordings were made in 1982 at the Echternach International Festival and in Antwerp.
