Personnel: Rebecca Woolcock (piano).
Recording information: Vienna, Austria.
There are only five cuts on Duncan McTier's Live in Vienna DVD, but they are extraordinarily performed, as one would expect. McTier gives an informative introduction to "Spring Song," Rebecca Woolcock's piano starting the beautiful and moving piece.
It is followed by "Melodie (Romanza Patetica)," with McTier again explaining a bit about the song before going in to the almost seven-minute performance. The camera work is superb, catching the hands on the keyboard and the bow lovingly caressing the instrument, and the audio of these virtuosos is perfectly recorded. "Vocalise," an eighteen-and-a-half minute "Sonata Fr Kontrabass & Klavier," and a short conclusion of "Apr S un R Ve" close out the set. McTier is actually chattier in performance than during the extremely short video clip interview that is tagged on here as a quick "bonus." Produced by Barbara Weissenbeck, as are similar packages from Miroslav Vitous and Rufus Reid, these are among the better releases from Quantum Leap, though they also demand good liner note booklets to accompany the DVD disc. ~ Joe Viglione
