Notes & Reviews:

This recording is a collection of popular organ pieces ranging from Widor 's Toccata to Elgar 's Nimrod. The program is designed to show off the organ 's various divisions and is the last solo recording of this instrument before the organ undergoes major refurbishment and restoration. There are 108 speaking stops on the organ, and 7,256 pipes which are played on five manuals. A handful of the pipes date back to the 1697 Smith organ, although most of the historic organ dates back to Father Willis in 1872 and 1900. The organ was previously rebuilt in 1977 by Manders. There were many major additions at this time including the famous Royal Trumpets which were installed above the great west doors of the cathedral. Born in 1971, Huw Williams has been Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music at St. Paul 's Cathedral since 1998. He has played for significant events including the Queen 's Golden Jubilee, the Queen Mother 's 100th Birthday Service and the Remembrance Service for the victims of the 9/11 attacks. He has performed in Canada and the United States and many parts of Europe. Recent recitals include concerts in Canterbury and St. George 's Chapel, Windsor as well as St. Thomas ' Church in New York and Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
