Notes & Reviews:

Gramophone
Superlative performances and the excellence of the recording, extraordinarily vivid and realistic, cannot be too strongly emphasised.

BBC Music Magazine
Massive, craggy performances which testify to Karajan's exceptional rapport with Sibelius. Many may prefer the less ponderous, airier tempos of Vänska, Beecham or Gibson, and En Saga's build-up is rather calculated, but Tapiola's storm gathers with unequalled power.

This album is part of a series of twenty must-have titles from the Warner Classics catalog, featuring their original and well-known iconic covers. "Karajan is a great master," wrote Jean Sibelius in 1955. These spellbinding interpretations of tone poems and other shorter pieces by Sibelius date from the early 1980s, when Karajan had been conducting his music for more than 40 years. "He is a composer who cannot really be compared to anyone else," said Karajan, who, with the magnificent Berlin Philharmonic, probes the music's mysteries and releases its haunting and noble sonorities.
