Notes & Reviews:

Grammy-nominated, Argentinean cellist Sol Gabetta devoted her previous recordings to great cello concertos of the Baroque (Vivaldi), Romantic (Tchaikovsky) and modern (Shostakovich) eras. On her new recording, she introduces concertos from the Viennese Classical period for the first time. Joined by the Chamber Orchestra of Basel, she ahs coupled the famous C Major Concerto by Joseph Haydn with two repertoire rarities, one by Haydn's contemporary Leopold Hofmann and the other by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (adapted by conductor George Szell from Mozart's 'Flute Concerto').

"[Sol] Gabetta's discography has taken her from Vivaldi to Shostakovich, now coming back to the mid-18th century. She proves here again that she is an extremely versatile musician, possessing the ability to deftly switch styles without compromising sound or musicality. For this set of Classical concertos, Gabetta plays with an appropriately lean, focused sound that allows for exceptionally clean articulation and simplicity in phrasing. The precision of intonation and right-arm technique especially shines through in the little-heard Hofmann concerto and brings excitement and interest anew to the popular Haydn C major concerto. An all-around pleasing disc, this album is especially suited to listeners unfamiliar with the Hofmann concerto." - All Music Guide

Gramophone Magazine
Lovely performances from a cellist who combines a winningly smooth cantabile with a focused light tone and incisive rhythmic precision. The Basle Chamber Orchestra gives support which is handsomely coloured and stylishly clean-lined... making them a good match for their soloist and helping to create a happy overall impression of talented young artists having fun together and avoiding the routine.
