If there were any doubt that director Tom Vaughan's Extraordinary Measures is a heartwarming movie, it would be erased by a listen to even a short excerpt from Andrea Guerra's score. Employing the London Philharmonic Orchestra, to which he seems to add a few electrified instruments here and there, Guerra provides a sweet, melodic set of themes to accompany the film's story of a father's search for a cure for the illness suffered by his children. The title track establishes Guerra's tone of gentle, soothing mood music, as the orchestra passes motifs around the instruments. As the score goes on, things occasionally get more wistful or conflicted, but the reassuring themes continue to reappear, setting the listener/viewer's mind at rest that dramatic and musical resolutions are in the offing. Even in a cue called "Desperation," matters never get out of hand, at least as far as the score is concerned, and that is a signal that problems will be overcome. ~ William Ruhlmann
