Notes & Reviews:
Bartok's 44 Duos for 2 Violins are etudes in musicianship and the integration of folk song into the composer's personal idiom. All but two of the themes are traditional -- culled from the 'peasant' tunes Bartok had gathered in his fieldwork. For this recording, Angela and Jennifer Chun have prepared a new grouping of these colorful miniatures.
"The Chun sisters group these pieces for maximum flow and contrast, and hold nothing back. Note, for example, the marked timbral differentiation the violinists achieve in Nos. 25 and 34, the internal "swing" propelled by their emphatic accents in Nos. 32, 35, and the four "New Year's Greeting" pieces, and their imaginatively shaded pizzicatos in No. 43. The Mosquito Dance's tricky cross-rhythms come off with delightfully "stinging" aplomb, while even the easiest selections benefit from the Chuns' tonal and expressive generositythe Chuns' caring, committed, and stylistically perceptive Bartok playing deserves serious consideration." - Classics Today
"Violinists Angela and Jennifer Chun share an approach that makes their 2010 release of these pieces appear intelligently planned and stylistically unified, though their vivid string sonorities and spontaneous exchanges make the music feel colorful and engaging, and far from an exercise... Harmonia Mundi's sound is credibly present and almost palpable, preserving enough grittiness in the string tone to make it feel close-up and natural." -All Music Guide
I'm sure [Bartók] would have approved of the way the Chun sisters mix the simpler and more complicated duos, with continual contrast of style and tempo...And the Chuns are capable players: unsurprisingly they're well matched
