Felix Mendelssohn: Oedipus in Kolonos

Album Summary

>Mendelssohn, Felix : Oedipus in Kolonos, incidental music, Op. 93
Conductor Ensemble
  • >

Notes & Reviews:

Mendelssohn's music for Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonis is rather less well known than his score for Antigone. Both compositions had their origins in commissions from Frederick William IV who was intent on reviving Greek tragedy and other examples of classical drama in Berlin.

BBC Music Magazine
The chorus lamenting the horrors of old age is spare and terrifying, while the final bars achieve an almost Wagnerian grandeur. All in all, the performance is superb, with a special wreath for the brows of the tenor section.
