Notes & Reviews:
Buxtehude's legacy, for many centuries neglected, has more recently been re-appraised and its importance accepted, not only for the quality of its craftsmanship but also for its undeniable influence on composers such as J.S. Bach. It is reputed that Bach walked over 200 miles to hear Buxtehude play the organ, so extraordinary was his reputation. The Purcell Quartet has built up a fine reputation over the years for the quality of performances and musicality. They have previously recorded the Buxtehude Sacred Cantatas in two volumes, which were received with much critical acclaim and enthusiasm.
"The listener's impression is of a freely through-composed work. The rapid succession of contrasting affects and styles of composition is sometimes dizzying. It certainly gives on an appreciation of the variety of the high-baroque musical palette. Sonata 3 is especially striking for its experimental use of chromaticism; one quickly loses sight of the work's progress. The playing here is expert. In lyrical passages they give one the impression of an operatic duet. The many spirited passages, though, are idiomatically violinistic. Notes are in English." - American Record Guide
BBC Music Magazine
The Purcell Quartet gives amiable performances, eschewing flamboyant gestures or expressive excess in favour of a convivial musical discourse.
