A little known but important and gifted 20th Century Czech composer
This is a most welcome CD containing about half the works for piano composed by Oskar Morawetz, a Czech composer who emigrated to Canada in 1940, one step ahead of his Nazi pursuers. There are some wonderful pieces on this CD. The 1947 Scherzo, his most often performed work, was given its premier by the world famous Czech pianist, Rudolf Firkusny. In my opinion the Scherzo by itself is worth the price of the CD. The 1956 Fantasy, Elegy & Toccata are excellent pieces as is the 1968 Suite for Piano (Prelude, Nocturne and Dance). I would definitely rank the Toccata with those of Prokofiev and Ravel. The Ten Preludes for Piano (1964) are perhaps the most impressive pieces on the CD. Very interesting pieces, and complex, they deserve an important place in the 20th Century piano literature. Morawetz is a composer at whom pianists should look seriously in order to expand and modernize their repertoires. This is very fine music for which my appreciation grows with every hearing. There are two pieces on the CD that are a somewhat longer than the others that I find less satisfying. The Ballade (1946) and the Fantasy on a Hebrew Theme (1951) both tend to wander a bit. The young Canadian pianist, Darrett Zusko, gives outstanding performances of this music. This album is clearly a labor of love on his part and it shows.
