Notes & Reviews:

From Franz Schubert to Canadian composer Denis Gougeon, the music on this CD invites us into a poetic world of heartfelt fervor and natural beauty. In the Baroque era, the combination of horn and voice was usually heard in operatic hunting scenes. In the Romantic period, composers were attracted by the richness of the horn's sonority, and by its ability to evoke both the intimate and the picturesque.

Ophelie Lieder et Melodies
This CD contains a seemingly unrelated group of songs gathered under the unusual title "Lieder et Melodies." Choice of the German word "Lieder," versus the French word "Chansons" is explained by the inclusion of songs by Austrian and German composers. What binds all of the songs on the CD together is inclusion of a French horn contribution, and all of the songs fall into the rare or rarely heard category, which is a shame, for each in its own way is delightful. Donizetti, best known for his operas, also wrote many songs, which are cruelly neglected. The beguiling "Dirti addio" was composed for the operatic tenor Napoleone Moriani. According to Grove Music, Strauss's song "Alphorn" (TrV. 64) was written in 1878 (the CD booklet gives 1876). The horn part was probably inspired by his father Franz, a noted hornist. Gounod's song "Le soir," composed 1841c., was one of many inspired by Lamartine's poetry. Berlioz's beautiful 1833 "Le jeune p‚tre breton" was published in 1850 as one of five songs comprising his Op. 13. Of Schubert's 634 songs, only the enchanting "Auf dem Strom," D.943, calls for a horn part; how sad that this is his only example! The inclusion on this CD of rare songs by the all-but-forgotten German composers Franz Lachner and Carl Gottlieb Reissiger was a happy idea, for these songs deserve to be heard more often. Those inspired by Shakespeare's tragic character Ophelia include painters Eugene Delacroix (1844) and John Everett Millais (1852), and poet Arthur Rimbaud (1870). In turn, Millais and Rimbaud inspired the contemporary Canadian composer Denis Gougeon to compose "Ophelie" in 2007. Though beautiful in it own way, this song doesn't fit in with the others on this CD, all from the nineteenth century. The Canadian soprano Marianne Fiset, already the winner of several prizes, performs exquisitely, and the sensitive contributions from hornist Louis-Philippe Marsolais and pianist Michael McMahon make this a superb disc. The recording quality is excellent. A fascinating CD; donít miss it! Ted Wilks
