Album Summary
Conductors Ensembles ComposerNotes & Reviews:
Underpinned by an irresistible energy and impelled by an innate rhythmic drive, Thierry Pecou's 'Symphonie du Jaguar' and 'Vague de pierre' explore the mysteries of pre-Columbian Mayan Mexico and literary painters of ancient China. The 'Symphonie du Jaguar' depicts the cyclic course of time and the trajectory of the sun and in the form of a red jaguar in its journey into the bowels of the earth where it is regenerated. 'Vague de pierre' ("Stone wave", a literal translation of "Shi Tao", a Chinese literary painter of the late Manchu dynasty) is inspired by an external source, the writings of Francois Cheng and Francois Jullien on art and philosophy in China.
Gramophone Magazine
Pécou serves up a meta-collage...The voices intone and chatter, and Pécou nudges his instrumental soloists away from cosy classical politeness with resourceful extended techniques.
The Independent
In 'Symphonie Du Jaguar', South American animist myths are brought to life with startling shifts and clashing tonal colouration, including shrill, declamatory vocals, blaring horns, and a dense, thunderous barrage of percussion
