The greatest of all musical myths tells how the Thracian singer Orpheus lost his beloved Eurydice to death, saved her from the underground world, and then lost her again. This highly dramatic and tragic story was extremely popular with composers of the early 17th century, who express Orpheus' joys and laments in virtuoso, moving airs.
